It's a shame most people don't have to come out.

Most people conceptualize coming out as a one-and-done event. In that moment, you renounce internalized shame and embrace your identity. In my experience, however, it's more nuanced than that.

Fundamentally, coming out means first recognizing that who you are is different from the majority of society, and second, making the choice to live in that difference rather than conforming to the majority. Sure, there’s the experience of coming out for the first time, which is often the scariest, but it doesn’t end there. You actually have to come out over and over again, not too unlike having to introduce yourself each time you meet someone new.

Analogous Inspiration: A How-To

This video by Katie Shelly is new to me from a Google search for this newsletter, but I was surprised by how good it is! A great resource to bookmark. I've also included my completed version of the exercise, in case you'd rather pick an analogous inspiration from there.

BONUS: Turn this playlist on in your car, roll down the windows, blast the volume, and jam out, especially at the stoplight. This is as easy as we can make it for you to have some analogous inspiration for coming out. Even better - add your own guilty pleasures to the playlist. Right now, it's essentially just me coming out as a Jordin Sparks and Shawn Mendes fan.

Brent Taylor

I have an unquenchable curiosity about the world and unapologetic initiative, which makes me a strong activator. I step into leadership roles in every environment I find myself. I am a reveler, so while I’m leading a team through disruption, we have a ton of fun. I half-joke that I like dogs more than people and am proud to have explored all seven continents before I was 30.
